It's definitely physical: the hot flashes, waking up in the night, can't remember anything, the weight gain, but it's also emotional: the mood swings, irritability, the burnout, the lack of motivation, the sense of just not feeling like yourself. You wonder if you're just "getting old", or maybe your hormones are out of whack? You are doing ALL the right things. You exercise, you eat clean, you have good relationships, a career, and just when you're starting to feel like you've got it figured out, the rollercoaster of emotions hits you.
